Are you familiar with any of these names? "Father of the Blues" W.C. Handy; Sam Phillips, credited with the birth of rock n' roll and discovering Elvis Presley; George Lindsay, a UNA graduate who played "Goober" on The Andy Griffith Show; Stewart Cink, PGA golfer and 2009 champion of the British Open; and Don Leslie Michael who received the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War. Each of these famous or heroic individuals either originated in Florence or lived in our community for a season. Without Sam we might never have known Elvis...can you imagine? And who else but George could've brought the character of Goober to life in our living rooms? Talent, bravery, and a unique ability to see the gifts others possessed characterized these local greats, and their individual character is what helped put Florence on the map.
