Muscle Shoals was known in the 1960's and 70's as the "Recording Capital of the World" due to Fame Recording Studios which was founded by Rick Hall. Fame is noted for recordings by artists like Arthur Alexander, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Otis Redding.
Henry Ford, maker of the first automobile, also had an interest at one time in developing Muscle Shoals for industrial purposes, and even opened and operated a plant for awhile in the nearby Listerhill community.
Add in some Cherokee Indian hunting territory and you have a city with great diversity and historical intrigue. But we must always remember that a city is known for the unique individuals that originate, pass through, and contribute their lives in some way to creating its story.
